LA Remember the mandala the monks created in the Museum of Natural History in the late ‘80s? It took them six weeks to make it, dropping the colored sand grain by grain. I was there when two kids came by and scuffed the whole thing up.

MA And then?

LA The monks laughed.

MA Of course.

LA Because it’s about changing. It didn’t matter how much work they had put into it—they were going to destroy it in the end anyway

To test the limits of the relationship between performer and audience, Abramović developed one of her most challenging (and best-known) performances. She assigned a passive role to herself, with the public being the force which would act on her.

Abramović had placed upon a table 72 objects that people were allowed to use (a sign informed them) in any way that they chose. Some of these were objects that could give pleasure, while others could be wielded to inflict pain, or to harm her. Among them were scissors, a knife, a whip, and, most notoriously, a gun and a single bullet. For six hours the artist allowed the audience members to manipulate her body and actions.

Initially, members of the audience reacted with caution and modesty, but as time passed (and the artist remained impassive) several people began to act quite aggressively. As Abramović described it later:

“The experience I learned was that…if you leave decision to the public, you can be killed.” ... “I felt really violated: they cut my clothes, stuck rose thorns in my stomach, one person aimed the gun at my head, and another took it away. It created an aggressive atmosphere. After exactly 6 hours, as planned, I stood up and started walking toward the public. Everyone ran away, escaping an actual confrontation.”

gotta love FRONT magazine, i had a photoshoot about 2 weeks back for them, so keep your eyes peeled :)
what i like is there not a typical lads mag, the girls are real and diferent and there's so much cool...stuff!
Plus, vikki blows is amazing. actualy got the best compliment ever when the photographer said i looked a little like vikki in some shots! (last photo me....yes my hair is black now)

Yelena Yemchuk's photography is the stuff of my dreams. i much prefere her 'projects' rather than her fashion photography (which in its own right is a head above alot of other fashion photographers) as she has something to say; each on of her photographs tells a story, and something is just not quite right and a little bit sinister. amazing.

my favourite model, sasha pivovarova shot by my favourite photographer, yelena yemchuk. outstanding. yelenas photography seems to capture a truthful innocence that many other photographer cannot (which is greatly helped by the use of film rather than digital). many fashion shoots at the moment seem far to staged, stiff and indiferent, whereas yelena manages to really capture a moment. For some reason this shoot reminds me of youth, in spring wandering around the woods.

Just a mild obsession with the photographer yelena yemchuk. shes worked as a fashion photographer in I-D, Vogue, Elle and collaborated with musicians such as Billy corgan (her boyfriend) of the Smashing pumkins. however i much prefer her personal works that can be viewed on her website. definatley worth a look.
